This week's resolution

Do ab work EVERY night. Even if it's ten minutes in my pyjamas, which is what I just did. Easy, doesn't need equipment or much space. No excuses.

I can feel my abs regaining some strength. I can do planks! My new Facebook profile pic is me doing a side plank and managing to smile at the same time!

I'm back!

I didn't actually go anywhere, but my mind was a bit absent. I am BACK on the horse, though, and managed to smash a Super Saturday Session yesterday. Here's (rather poor-quality) photographic evidence:

5km run to Kings Park, followed by a Pain in Kings Park training session with the fab Perth 12WBT crew, followed by the 5km back home. If you can't read the number underneath my heart rate, it says 1501 calories - I got to my gate and it was 1480, so I kept running until it hit 1500. *grin*

Today I overslept after being woken up half a dozen times overnight by various children, so missed my planned outing for the morning, but I am going to do a DVD once they're in bed. Tomorrow is a public holiday in Perth, and I've got a fun run planned with my elder daughter, hopefully she is up to it as she has been a bit under the weather. 3km, not a lot for me, but a lot for her - she's only eight.

Alastair does burpees

First, a note: I have had it pointed out to me that, for a post that was supposed to focus on my strengths, I indulged in a lot of negative self-talk in my previous post. Mea culpa. Just let it be known: I am awesome, hehe. I am actually in a better place with regard to self-esteem and self-belief than I have been in many years!

Now, for the fun stuff. When we were at the park watching my eight-year-old have soccer practice this week, Alastair (five years old) asked me if we could do burpees. Really, what can you say to that?

When he stops and shakes his head, it's because he didn't do it right. I think he is his mother's son.

After this, he sat on my back while I did push-ups (22kg of resistance!) and when I said I couldn't do any more, his response was: "Just one more! No, wait, three more!" Thanks, Alastair.

Day 1

Goodbye 'girly' hand-held weights (2kg?! Pfft.), hello, stealing my other half's dumbbells and barbell, hehe. Though he did request I put the dumbbells back to the 15kg that was on there before instead of my pissy 5kg. He can't run 14km, though :P

Day 1, Lean and Strong program. I did 84 push-ups today, 48 of them on my toes (not all at once, as part of supersets). I did my fitness test as well: 3.27 for my 1km, it bloody well burned though!

I think I'll be sore in the morning.

Note to self: set goals higher

Today I did a 14km fun run. I hadn't managed to get to that distance in training, and I hadn't even run 10+kms in a month. I thought, 2 hours would be okay. 1hr45min would be good, I'd be happy with that.

So, yeh, I kind of smashed it. I'm on a bit of a high right about now. Although I am still wearing my Skins because I can tell I'm going to be sore tonight. The next fun run that I do, I might have to go up a start category and not start in the slowest one!

One year ago I ran the 4.5km course at this same fun run. I'd just completed the Couch to 5k running program. It took me about 30 minutes. After that I basically didn't run again until signing up for Round 1 of the 12WBT at the start of this year. Now, a year later, and after only five months of training, I can run three times as far, and significantly faster. Thank you 12WBT!

Suddenly the half-marathon goal in August looks very achievable.

I have to say, one of my favourite parts of the run was the way my playlist - despite being on Shuffle - managed to pull out the right songs at the right time. One section of the run was through the freeway tunnel. It was very warm, and I'm not convinced the air quality was okay; I was struggling. Just as I saw (literally) the light at the end of the tunnel, 'Beautiful Day' came on. Later on, at about 9km, when we came off the freeway and started running along the river, which felt like a turning point to me because I knew where we were going, 'I Can See Clearly Now'. And at 13.5km, just about to run into the WACA, 'Firework' by Katy Perry, just in time for a sprint to the finish line. Awesome.

DITL 12WBT style

That's a day in the life, 12 Week Body Transformation style, if you can't decipher the acronyms.

I actually forgot to take a photo when the alarm first went off, had to go back and take it 7 minutes later!

Water and supplements to start the day.

The shoes are by the door, JFDI.

Other paraphernalia (iPhone armband, earphones, heart-rate monitor & HRM strap).

Ready to go. Long-sleeved running top because it's a little chilly, relatively speaking (it was about 8 degrees, but after the endless summer we've had here in Perth, it feels very cold).

This is what greeted me when I got out the front gate. After I literally ran into my neighbour walking his dogs. I had to laugh because my first thought was "what the heck is he doing up at this time??" when obviously I was just as crazy!

Back! Only time for 20 minutes of intervals today - luckily that fits nicely with a route around a few blocks, keeping to the main streets where it's well-lit.

Cooling down now.

Time to make brekky.

My best friend in the mornings.

Breakfast: porridge with berries, and COFFEE.

Time for a bit of computer catch-up while I eat.

Look over the to-do list.

Shower time.

And face, deodorant, teeth (you'll have to imagine my toothbrush & toothpaste).

Need a belt so my pants won't fall down (and these are jeans that didn't even fit last winter - the 12WBT works!!)

Interrupted by a sweet little girl, who gets carried to the big bed to snuggle daddy (note the artistic photography to keep daddy out of the picture, as he would not appreciate his sleeping self being broadcast to the blogosphere). Daddy will be getting her off to daycare and the bigger two off to my parents' house before he goes to work.

Evie's bag ready for daycare, and my morning tea ready for work.

Dressed - thank goodness we dress casual at work (I do back-office data processing for banks & government entities).

It's a bit cold.

Time to go!

The view out the front gate is a little nicer second time round.

Walking.

... and I'm here. Sorry, this is the carpark out front - I'm probably not really supposed to post photos of my workplace on the internet, so I won't!

Now imagine me inside for 3 hours because, yeh, no photos inside :)

Done! Walking home.

At my parents' house (next door to mine) to pick the big kids up.

We're home.

Washing on (that's a 10kg washing machine, LOVE it, means only one load most days now that Evie's out of day nappies).

Washing to fold.

And folded.

The organic fruit and veg delivery arrives (mostly fruit, I've still got quite a lot of vegies, and the kids go through that much fruit easily).

Don't forget to drink water!

Lunch time: leftover 12WBT-friendly kangaroo lasagne from last night, with mixed salad leaves.

Emma and Alastair waiting for the bus - we're heading to the shopping centre to watch Hop at the movies.

Here comes the bus!

I get a coffee so that I don't eat their popcorn!

On the bus home.

Running up the street to get Evie from daycare.

... and running back down the street with Evie in tow.

A quick stop at the playground (fully fenced so I can relax).

Home again!

Breakfast for dinner. Trimmed free-range bacon, scrambled organic eggs (no milk/cream/butter), organic baked beans, organic tomato, on a bed of organic rocket. Mmmmmmm, so good. The kids are happy too (except they don't eat rocket or tomato).

I stopped there, that was enough. You missed the excitement of the kids having a bath, their dad finally getting home, and getting them to bed, which at 9.20pm is still a work in progress!

New habits

Yesterday morning when I woke up for my run, I got an SMS that gave me a nasty shock. Don't worry, it's not bad health news for me or loved ones, it's a financial shock due to a completely idiotic mistake I made a few weeks ago. Ugh! I felt awful.

The old me would have gone back to bed and hidden under the covers, probably with as much chocolate or sweet stuff as I could scrounge up - and being the Easter weekend, that would have been a lot. It was tempting, so tempting. But I was already half-dressed.

So instead I finished getting ready, laced those shoes up, and JFDI. Took out my frustration with myself, on the pavement and the steps of Jacob's Ladder instead. 3.5km there, 6 laps down and up, 3.5km back. 1.5 hours, more than 1000 calories.

MUCH better way to deal with it, I was pretty much over it by the time I got home.

Still have the bill to pay, though, who wants to buy some Phoenix cards?!?! LOL.

Today was a better run

I still didn't manage to get up and do it before work, instead I did it after work, and it felt ok. Not as good as running first thing, but much better than the late afternoon effort the other day.

Evie was at daycare for the morning, so I had to pick her up by 12.30pm, but I wanted to get her a little early. I finished work just before 11am, went home, got changed and had about half an hour to spare. Not enough for a long run, so I just went to the park across the road and did interval running (1min faster pace, 1min30sec slower pace). My heartrate stayed quite high and I burned nearly 400 calories in the 30 minutes, so I'm happy with that! It's a tactic I'm going to have to use more now that I'm more pushed for time, and also now that it is darker in the mornings.

Of course, when I got to daycare Evie was asleep, so I should probably have waited to pick her up!! But we went and had lunch together as a treat: my going back to work hasn't been easy for her, either.

I remember why I run in the mornings

Today I treated myself to a sleep-in and ran in the afternoon instead. I left it a good couple of hours after lunch, but I still felt awful, like my lunch was sitting right at the top of my stomach ready to come out at any minute. Ugh.

I gave up after 5km and walked the remaining 2km home. I suppose 5km is better than nothing. Note to self: next time, get up and run in the morning, and take a nanna nap in the afternoon!

That was hard work!

But I did it. The 6km was actually 6.5, and I did it in 35.55, keeping up an average pace of around 5.30/km, which is pretty fast for me. I was second female across the line, too!

Just the motivational pick-me-up I needed. I am determined to lose 1kg this week, which will bring me to 10kg lost in total :)

Today was a good exercise in JFDI

My period started yesterday. I think most people reading this are probably women, so we all know how that feels.

This morning I woke up and I did not want to run. I was sore from basketball yesterday. I was tired. But I'd promised myself a new personal best today, I was going to run 12 kilometres. So I just put on those shoes and got out the door. The first 2km was awful - not sure whether my brain or my body was protesting more. However, I pushed through, and I made it! 12.63km in fact, as my GPS was playing up on RunKeeper and I had to estimate and then adjust the mapping when I got home.

I followed that with taking three kids to the pool for a birthday party, and then riding my bike over to a friend's place to deliver her some food (she just had her sixth baby). OK, so I succumbed to some party food for lunch, but in my defence the family all work with food and it was SO yummy. I had two small squares of pizza, and a petit-four-sized vanilla slice. And a skim-milk coffee. It's a confession, but I don't feel bad about it ;)

Next Sunday I have a 6km fun run. 10km in April, 14km in May, and my big goal, 21.1km (half-marathon) in August.

Smashed it this morning

Yay! This morning I went to a group training session in Kings Park with a whole lot of other Perth 12WBT participants. It was fun - in a painful way - and combined with the 3.5km uphill run there, the 3.5km run to the shops and 1.5km walk home, I burned 1414 calories in just under 3 hours.

I am glad tomorrow is my core/stretch day, though, because I am very sore. My bottom hurts from falling over rollerskating, I did something to a muscle in my hand at boxing, I have a big bruise on one knee from basketball and well, I'm just sore all over from this morning!

I am proud of all the new things I've been trying, which was one of my goals. Since starting the 12WBT, I've done the following for the first time:

1. Body Combat class
2. Body Balance class
3. Body Pump class
4. boxing class
5. a game of basketball
6. group training session

I've also run 10km twice, and done 6 sets of Jacob's Ladder. I've done both those things before, but not since I was 16.

Hitting it hard

I was disappointed with myself last week. So this week I am hitting it HARD. Thursday I did a 10km run plus 3km of walking (the walking wasn't really a choice, had to go shopping). Friday I joined my kids rollerskating instead of sitting on the sidelines - I felt kind of silly but burned 600 calories over the two hours!

This morning I did a boxing class for the first time ever. It was pretty fun ... but I did forget my heart rate monitor. The woman who encouraged me to come along said she burned over 600 calories though, so I'm going to assume I did at least 500, plus the walk to and from the class. Then this afternoon a friend roped me into playing basketball with her social team. I am a netballer, and even then my skills are rusty. I think I gave it a good go, even if I did keep stopping when I got the ball, heh. I couldn't wear my HRM though - no watches allowed - so I don't know how many I burned there either!

Tomorrow I will run to Kings Park (about 3.5km uphill), do a group training session with the 12WBT Perth crew, and then either run, walk or crawl home depending on how I feel. Hoping to hit the 1000 calorie mark!

My food hasn't been perfect, but it's been okay. I hope the scales reflect the extra work!

But it's too hot!

I could so be rocking this excuse right now.

This is the 5-day weather forecast:

Forecast for Saturday
A mostly sunny and humid day. Light E'ly winds becoming light to moderate
W/SW'ly in the afternoon.

Precis: Very hot. Humid.
City: Max 38

Sunday Very hot. Partly cloudy. Min 25 Max 38
Monday Partly cloudy. Min 26 Max 35
Tuesday Sunny. Min 24 Max 37
Wednesday Very hot. Sunny. Min 24 Max 38
Thursday Sunny. Min 24 Max 37
Friday Partly cloudy. Min 25 Max 37

It's already been that way for the best part of a week.

And you know what? It IS a pain. I can't do outdoor workouts during the day, or even in the early evening. Luckily, I get my walking in because I have to. I run early in the morning, when it's still yucky - humidity this morning was 91% and it was already nearly 30 degrees - but not so bad that I'll die of heatstroke.

I can do indoor stuff after the kids go to bed or, again, early in the morning.

Besides, surely, SURELY, I am burning more calories than on cooler days, the amount of sweat that's coming off me!

We're almost at kick-off!

The Week 1 nutrition & exercise plans were released this morning. How exciting! I'm going shopping this afternoon - I just hope the DVDs I ordered online arrive in time.

I had a terrible night's sleep last night, in fact it hardly involved any sleeping, so terrible that I could not get out of bed when my 5.45am alarm went off to go running. Instead I took Evie to the park after school drop-off, and did a variety of activities with the proviso that we wouldn't leave until my HRM said 500 calories burnt. Done!

I'm sure fellow parents will understand that whatever you do, your toddler wants to do to. Here's what happened when I tried to use the equipment I'd brought:

(Those are only 1kg weights, so she's not going to hurt herself.)

Then I was running around the playground and she decided we were playing chasey. Hehe. This park has free equipment: an elliptical, stepper, twisty thing, seated bike, and a butterfly press.

A milestone

Today I made it through my first-ever Body Combat class. Group fitness scares me; I tried Zumba once and left halfway through, it required too much co-ordination for my liking and I felt silly.

I couldn't get some of the combinations in Combat, but I found it fun, I think it's much more my style than Zumba. Hopefully I can find something else I enjoy, too!
